- Original articles are considered for publication on the
condition that they have not been published or submitted
for publication elsewhere. The publisher reserves the right
to edit manuscripts to fit the space available and to ensure
conciseness, clarity, and stylistic consistency, subject
to the author's final approval.
Manuscripts are reviewed and selected in a blinded process
by editors and appropriate content experts. Therefore, it
is important that submitted manucripts and illustrations
do not contain information that will identify the origin
of the paper (except for the title page and separate affiliations
page, which will not be sent to reviewers).
- Manusctips that do not follow these outlined instructions
will be rejected promptly.
ACCEPTABLE ARTICLES
- JOLA accepts original experimental investigations, review
articles, case reports, and technique articles.
- Case manuscripts should present challenging cases, or
those for which many treatment alternatives are possible
or new techniques or materials are used. Manuscripts submitted
for this feature must be no longer than 5 double-spaced
pages and have no more than 20 illustrations.
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
- Submit three typewritten copies (original and duplicates),
double-spaced on one side of the paper, with at least a
1-inch margin on all sides. Number all pages sequentially,
with the title of the paper as a running header on each
page (+ floppy disk or CD-ROM).
- Title page. Page 1 should include the title of
the article (descriptive but as concise as possible) and
the name, degrees, title, professional affiliation, and
location of every author. Fax, e-mail address, and complete
mailing address must also be provided for the corresponding
author. If the paper was presented before an organized group,
the name of the organization, location, and date should
be indicated.
- Abstract/Key words. Page 2 should include a maximum
250-word structured abstract (with headings Objectives,
Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusion). Abstracts for
case reports and literature reviews need not be structured.
A list of 6 to 10 key words should also be included.
- Clinical relevance statement. Experimental investigations
must include a brief statment of the clinical relevance
of the paper.
- Introduction. Summarize the rationale and purpose
of the study, giving only pertinent references. Clearly
state the working hypothesis.
- Materials and Methods. Present materials and methods
in sufficient detail to allow confirmation of the observations.
Published methods should be referenced and discussed only
briefly, unless modificaitons have been made. Indicate the
statistical methods used, if applicable.
- Results. Present results in a logical sequence
in the text, tables, and illustrations. Do not repeat in
the text all the data in the tables or illustrations; emphasize
only important observations.
- Discussion. Emphasize the new and important aspects
of the study and the conclusions that follow from them.
Do not repeat in detail data or other material given in
the Introduction or Results section. Relate observations
to other relevant studies and point out the implications
of the findings and their limitations.
- Conclusion. Include a numeric listing of evidence-based
conclusions that can be made according to the material presented
in the paper.
- Acknowledgments. Acknowledgments should be typed
on a separate page. Grant or other financial support should
be specified, citing the name of the supporting organization
and grant number.
- Abbreviations. The full term for which an abbreviation
stands should precede its first use in the text unless it
is a standard unit of measurement.
- Trade names. Generic terms are to be used whenever
possible, but trade names and manufacturer should be included
parenthetically at first mention.
REFERENCES
- All references given must be cited in the text and numbered
in order of appearance.
- The reference list should be double-spaced at the end
of the article in numeric sequence.
- Do not include unpublished data or personal communications
in the reference list. Cite such references parenthetically
in the text and include a date.
- Avoid using abstracts as references.
- Provide complete information for each reference, including
names of all authors (up to six). If the reference is to
part of a book, also include the title of the chapter (or
part), names of the book's editor(s), and publisher.
Journal reference style:
1. Dietschi D, Schatz JP. Current restorative modalities
for young patients with missing anterior teeth. Quintessence

in glass.
- Original artwork must be provided with original submission.

drawn and lettered large enough to be read after reduction.
Good-quality laser-printed art is acceptable (no photocopies,

sheet, and numbered consecutively.

must accompany all submitted manuscripts before they can
be reviewed for publication. This form can be found on the
