The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the effects of surgical orthodontic correction of vertical maxillary excess on the temporomandibular joint and related structures. Seventeen patients took part in the study, which included an anamnestic evaluation, a clinical evaluation of mandibular function, and an occlusal examination. At up to four years posttreatment, most participants showed mild or no dysfunction, most possessed prematurities or working and balancing interference. and most indicated that the treatment was worthwhile. Although this retrospective pilot study has limitations, the authors hope that it will serve as a guide for future, more extensive research.
