This book encourages dental and primary health care professionals to work together in promoting oral health as an essential part of public health. Written by experts in dental public health from the United Kingdom and Brazil, it positions the subject of children’s oral health within the broader disciplines of public health and oral health promotion, presenting practical strategies for prevention of dental caries, periodontal disease, traumatic dental injury, and malocclusion, among others. It also profiles public health concerns that influence oral health, such as environmental and social factors, habit development, nutrition and diet, and community health.

Preface
This book is memorable for a number of reasons. It is the first comprehensive book in dentistry on promoting the oral health of younger people. The chapters reflect the philosophy of the ‘new pubic health’ in general, and oral health promotion in particular. For me, it is a significant personal milestone as the authors are my past students and colleagues. They have forged a coherent unique approach to oral public health from the ideas they gleaned whilst at University College London. I hope that their ideas will spread so that when we look back we shall see how far the discipline of oral public health has advanced. More importantly, the oral health of the public will be bettered by the application of the concepts outlined in this book.
